The second prototype game is underway. We are to make a game for people with spinal injuries. They do therapy on a superwide treadmill device with three screens surrounding them. When they are on it, they are connected to a strap which relieves of their weight and they can relearn to walk. The screens serve the purpose of introducing external stimuli such as virtual worlds or games. The idea is they can re-learn how to walk while navigating a environment within a controlled environment.
The Idea
We worked very hard to hit up on a idea that wasnt simply gamifying walking or physical therapy. The difficulty is thats exactly what they need to do and the only interaction we have with the player is three screens and the treadport. Chris Rawson came up with the brilliant idea that we could have a first person tower defense game.
The Player will take the role of a farmer defending his newly harvested crop from an invading horde of snipes determined to eat it. To accomplish this goal, the farmer will use snipe traps and bait to lure the snipes away from the food and capture them.
The Interface
The only interface we have is walking. So to pick up a trap or bait the player will walk TO the traps or bait and when they get within reach, they will automatically pick them up. They will then have marked drop zones where they will drop them and try to capture the snipe.
Here is some concept art of what our game will look like
